C'Mon, Feel the Noise!

...in the wise words of the ever-poignant Noddy Holder...

In this blog, I'm going to share with you our recent progress in making some noise as part of this month's book theme - noise.

Now our little one already had some instruments. Look here's some:

And here are some more:

Sensory bottles

And here she is rocking out on her ukulele:

But we wanted to start from scratch. After seeing her play with her toy telephone I got the idea of making her (get this) a telephone. I think since I was a child, I wanted to make a tin can telephone. The experience of connecting up two tins with string and hearing someone talk through it despite being in a different room is a wonderful demonstration of the science of sound. Or, as children might interpret it, magic.

So I started off with two tins, wrapping them with paper, just to protect the very slightly sharp edges.

Because of the sticky tape we couldn't just colour the paper directly so we coloured in the remaining strips of paper and stuck it over the top. Beautiful, I know.

The difficult bit was getting a hole through the cans. A screwdriver did the job but it took a fair bit of weedling.

Then, finally it was time for the string and 'Hey, Presto!'

Telephone done!

So did it work? In a word, no. But, in truth, I think I used too much string! I got a bit carried away. Of course, the string needs to be taut. Still though, it was fun making it. And we had even more fun afterwards...

First we started pulling it around the house...

Then Esme wanted to do some skipping! So we ended up taking it in turns to jump up and down with our telephone (or whatever it was!)

Finally we used the cans to do some drumming.

Drum. Noise.

Who would have thought one could have so much fun, with some tins?

Every time I do crafts or experiments with my little one, I take away a couple of things:

1. It's always worth doing, failure or otherwise.

2. I'd never get a gig on Blue Peter.
